“Rajesh Inamdar is a senior advocate practicing in the Supreme Court of India who has filed multiple medical bail applications for Asaram Bapu. Inamdar successfully presented arguments regarding the godman's critical cardiac conditions, securing interim bail in January 2025.”
Rajesh Inamdar is an advocate on record in the Supreme Court of India who has represented various high-profile clients in complex criminal, civil, and constitutional matters. In 2023, the Sant Shri Asaramji Bapu Trust retained Inamdar to manage Asaram Bapu's appeals and medical bail petitions before the Supreme Court. Inamdar's legal team focused on compiling medical records from various jail doctors and hospital boards to build a case for compassionate release.
In the petitions, Inamdar argued that Asaram Bapu, who is over 84 years old, suffered from severe coronary artery disease, recurring heart attacks, and multiple age-related comorbidities that could not be treated within the Jodhpur jail. He contended that denying a prisoner access to specialized medical care was a violation of the right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution. Inamdar successfully pushed for the court to order an independent medical evaluation by AIIMS, which validated the diagnosis.
In January 2025, Inamdar (working with senior counsel) presented the medical board's findings to a division bench of the Supreme Court. Despite strong opposition from the state government, which argued that Asaram's release would create security challenges, the bench accepted Inamdar's arguments, granting interim medical bail until March 31, 2025. Inamdar coordinated the execution of the bail bonds and managed the logistics of Asaram's transfer to a hospital in Maharashtra.
Inamdar continues to manage Asaram Bapu's ongoing appeals against his convictions in both the Jodhpur and Gandhinagar cases, regularly presenting petitions in the Rajasthan and Gujarat High Courts. His work in this case is noted in legal publications for its focus on the rights of elderly and terminally ill convicts. He continues to practice law in New Delhi, representing clients in major corporate and criminal cases.
