Prosecution witness
Hoshangabad, Madhya Pradesh
“Om Prakash Prajapati is a prosecution witness who survived a shooting attack along with his wife Sima Prajapati in Hoshangabad in 2014. The attack was executed by Asaram's hit squad to prevent them from testifying.”
Om Prakash Prajapati was a former follower of Asaram Bapu who became a prosecution witness in the sexual assault trials. Based in Hoshangabad, Madhya Pradesh, Prajapati and his family had active contact with the local ashram before turning against the organization. His willingness to testify regarding the movement of female disciples and the administrative decisions of the local trust made him a target for the hit squad.
In late 2014, while Prajapati and his wife, Sima Prajapati, were at their residence in Hoshangabad, unidentified gunmen fired multiple rounds at them. The couple survived the shooting, which was reported in national media as part of the violent campaign conducted by Asaram's followers across multiple states. The local police registered an FIR and provided the family with temporary security.
The subsequent arrest of hitman Tamraj (Tamradhwaj Sahu) in Noida in March 2025 confirmed that the shooting was planned and executed by his group. The hit squad had conducted a recce of the Prajapati home and was funded by ashram coordinators to eliminate the couple to prevent them from presenting their statements in court, illustrating the multi-state nature of the conspiracy.
Despite the attack, Prajapati and his wife remained prosecution witnesses, cooperating with the police in the ongoing trials. Prajapati continues to reside in Madhya Pradesh under police protection, running his local business. His case is a significant example of the violent campaign that targeted families of witnesses to disrupt the judicial process.
