Family witness, Surat rape case
Surat, Gujarat
“The unnamed husband of the elder Surat sister who accused Asaram of rape survived a stabbing attack in Surat in December 2013. The attack was the first violent incident targeting the family of the complainants following the filing of the FIR.”
This unnamed individual is the husband of the elder of the two Surat-based sisters who filed formal rape complaints against Asaram Bapu and his son Narayan Sai in October 2013. Following the filing of the FIR, he supported his wife and sister-in-law in their legal battle, cooperating with the Surat Police SIT and helping secure safe housing for the family.
On December 10, 2013, shortly after the arrest of Asaram Bapu and the flight of Narayan Sai, the husband was intercepted by unidentified men in Surat and stabbed multiple times in the back. He survived the attack after being hospitalized, which was reported in national media as the first violent incident targeting the family following the filing of the complaints.
The subsequent investigation linked the stabbing to the hit squad led by Tamraj and Kartik Haldar, who had been hired by ashram coordinators to target the family and force the withdrawal of the rape complaints. The attack was designed to create terror and prevent the sisters from testifying in court, illustrating the high-risk environment surrounding the trials.
Despite the stabbing, the family refused to withdraw the complaints, and the husband continued his support for the prosecution. The husband's identity has been protected by law enforcement to prevent further attacks, and the family continues to live under police security in Gujarat. His case remains a significant chapter in the history of the witness intimidation campaign.
